Week 25: No Title This Week

5  Questions:

1) Did the Valentine's Package make it yet?

2) Is it snowing or just cold?  Or it's so cold, the moisture doesn't really matter now?

4) Did you get my little letter in answer to your questions for me?  I hoped I didn't send it too late for you to get it.  And THANKS for writing to your brother!  President A asked him today if he was writing to you....good thing he could answer honestly.  ;)

5) Do you have much interaction with the other missionaries, elders or sister in your mission?  Of just your district in Normal?

1. Yes. Thank you very much momma!

2. As of right now it's just cold--though tomorrow is supposed to be hot: 35 degrees F! But Hermana Araujo told me today that winter here (according to the locals) usually only lasts through February [I was expecting something like Utah where it'll snow in March sometimes, but it sounds like not this year...] anyway, winter is practically over so that's good. The gloves I've been using have holes in the finger tips and Walmart didn't have any gloves today....so I'll be glad when it's just rainy. Hermana Araujo said the March weather is fun. I'm excited.

One thing I cannot figure out is how the humidity here works. I mean, if it's more humid, why are my hands so dry!? It makes no sense to me....but somehow that's how it is.

3. She's great! So Hermana Araujo is half Mexican and half Nicaraguan. She's probably the most adorable person of all time (she's like a doll, for real) because she's short and cute. She's also SUPER good with people. I love talking to members with her (well, I really just stand there and nod) because she just makes people feel important and special. That is a talent, I tell you what.

4. I did, thanks again. I put all my paper stuff in a flat rate today so I'll probably send it next week. Could you let me know again what the balance is on my card? I'm mostly just curious.

5. We actually do, but I think it's not very normal. It's really just because we work in three wards, so we interact with the Elders at MCMs and at church meetings, and then district meeting. So we know B2 and B1 Elders pretty well, and then the zone leaders (not in our district but see them at church) and the Pontiac Elders (in district but we don't see them on Sundays) we don't know as well. And then if we talk about the mission as a whole: everyone calls Peoria a black hole. Because you know next to no one from the other stakes (because we're so far away from everyone else). So we only interact with the other district in our zone and the other zone in the stake at zone meetings/conferences, and we have exchanges once a transfer with the hermana training leaders [one thing that's cool b/c we're in Peoria is that we get to blitz the town: both hermana training leaders come down here so we have two sets of hermanas for 24 hours. Everywhere else, one companion goes to the other companionship's area. But we can't do that because we're in Peoria. haha] So overall, we have very little interaction with other missionaries, but because we personally work with three wards, we work with the elders here on a regular basis. I'm excited though because we have a mission-wide conference in March! Woohoo! haha it's gonna be awesome.

I don't have much to say, so I thought I'd send some pictures instead. (:

Week 24: The 2nd Great Commandment: Love Your Próximo

5 Questions:

1) Did the packages get to you?

2) Were you transferred this week then?

3) Did you get a new companion?  If yes, please give details.

4) Did the members treat you to dinner for Valentine's Day?

5) Is it getting any warmer there?  It is crazy warm here.  I'm worried about water in the summer...I hope we have enough in the reservoirs to make it through.  The mountains look like it should be May, not February.

1. I got the boots--my toes have never been warmer--but not the other one. I'm guessing it'll probably get brought/sent down tomorrow for transfers. Thanks in advance!
2. Well, I'll get to this in a moment.
3. Yes. Once again, all shall be revealed with time...
4. Nope.
5. No, no, definitely not. (Name that movie.) It's still freezing. Somedays, I think I may just die. [that is a slight exaggeration, just so you know; I don't want you to worry too much.]

Alright. So in district meeting this week, we were talking about finishing strong (or something to that effect) and Elder Bise asked if anyone had done cross country running--one raised his hand. Anyway,
the point was the strategy when you run for long distances. Elder Rowley said the average person can run 3 more miles than they think they can; you just have to get over that awkward stage and push
through it.

Well, I am here to tell you that that is TRUE! I have officially made it three days longer than I thought I could with just one P-day. Just in case ya'll were wondering.

Now, as for transfers: let me tell you a story....
It's Valentine's Day in the year of our Lord two thousand and fifteen, and the dynamic duo of Hermana Grant & Hermana DeBuck are in for the evening, fulfilling their hour of language study during the less productive hour of eight o' clock to nine in the evening. Suddenly, the dread phone rings. The caller ID reads "AP Elder 2". It is the moment we've been anticipating: transfer calls. We pick up and exchange courtesies, then get down to business--to defeat the huns.

Elder Blackner asks us what we think is going to happen to us. We reply, "Well, we're pretty sure Hermana DeBuck is leaving, but we're hoping we get put in a trio so we can stay together."

A brief pause and then, "What would you say if I told you neither of those things was happening?"

"We would be very surprised." *awkward laughter*

"Then prepared to be surprised because, Hermana Grant, you're going to Wheaton!"

All is still for two heartbeats and then a faint "what" escapes her throat. A stupor of thought prevails in the mind of Hermana DeBuck as she struggles to comprehend the significance of what she has just
heard.

Then, again, Elder Blackner's voice: "Hermana Grant, your companion will be Hermana Lopez, where you'll be an Hermana Training Leader."

This time, a much louder "what" manages to make its way out of Hermana Grant's voice box. And the reality of what is happening settles firmly on the companionship. Logistics are discussed and information exchanged, through which Elder Blackner finds out that Hermana Grant actually only has one transfer more--the same as Hermana Lopez. Elder Blackner tells the Hermanas he'll check with President (who would have made this call but had other "pressing matters" to attend to...) and then get back to us.

26 agonizing minutes later, the phone once again rings aloud.

Elder Blackner says, "Change of plans: Hermana Grant, you'll still be an Hermana Training Leader, but you'll be going to Arlington Heights to be with Hermana Sewell, who still has another transfer after you."

In the end, this is what's happening:
-- Hermana Grant is going back to Arlington Heights where she will be an Hermana Training Leader; fortunately, this is the set of HTLs our area is assigned to, so she and Hermana Sewell (who was just here last week) will be back here this transfer for exchanges.

-- I will be staying in my lovely home of Bloomington-Normal for at least another six weeks. My new companion's name is Hermana Araujo.  However, I know next to nothing about her, save only that she's a latina, so I imagine my espanol skills will sky rocket. (: I'll give you more information when I have it.

Also, the next P-day is in 4 days, so I am just not motivated at all to write anything else. Sorry. I still love you. And I still know this Gospel is true.

Week 23: Eres Un Enviado de Dioses

5 Questions:

1) Did the boots get to you yet?  Please let me know when you get them.

2) Same question, different package--the Valentine's package from me. I think it was supposed to be there Wednesday.

3) I finally found a copy of the study guide for Jesus the Christ. Did you want your own copy?  Or just access to the family's?

4) Have you ever noticed the descriptions of Pharisees and Sadducees (especially in Jesus the Christ) sound like they could be describing political parties--especially in Utah?  Maybe it is just me....I couldn't get the thought out of my head as I read that chapter this week.

5) When will transfer week be this month?  Any sense of going or staying?  Just curious.

1. Nope. But we've got zone training tomorrow (so might get them tomorrow if they got to the office today) and exchanges this week, so I could ask the Hermana Training Leaders to watch for a package for me.

2. Nope. Same answer as above.

3. Yes! Is it via electronic device...? Or what? But yes, I would love that.

4. Also, yes! And the only thing they have in common is that they don't like Jesus....crazies. [I love Jesus the Christ though. It's amazing.]

5. Okay so here's what's happening: due to some meetings on internet proselyting for mission presidents that will be held in Salt Lake, President will be in Utah the first part of next week--which is when transfers would be. But, since he won't be here, transfers have been moved to the end of next week, I think to the 20th of February. So our next P-day will be a Thursday, about ten days (?) from now, so don't expect an email from me until then. Regarding what's happening to me next transfer, I'm pretty sure I'm going, but that's just the vibe I'm getting.

Awesome! Tell Maddie & Brytni congratulations for me! They're going to be fantastic full-time missionaries.

Speaking of Mr. Wilcock (our fantastic choir teacher at the high school), we had dinner last night with the Thayn's, in Bloomington 1st, and Sister Thayn said that she grew up in the same town as Mr. Wilcock. I don't know what her maiden name is, but she said she was good friends with his sister....so that was kind of random.

Also, the Thayn's are awesome. Their two girls, who are 8 and 11 I believe, LOVE Harry Potter. It was so fun, and I just felt like I was at home. It was great. They went to Harry Potter World over Christmas break; I will admit I am slightly jealous....but it sounds like they had a blast (and drank plenty of  butter beer. which is a necessity.)

Hna Grant has a goal to sing all of the Spanish hymns, so we sing one every morning at the beginning of companionship study, and guess what today was: Love at Home. I expressed my dislike of the song to her yesterday, so you can imagine what the kniving woman put me through this morning....in case you can't imagine, this is what happened: as we read in the White Handbook, she inserted "love at home" at every possible segment. Needless to say, I was not "feeling the love" afterwards--JK, we were pretty much dying with laughter by the end.

So this week was pretty bad numbers-wise, but we first-contacted a boatload of people. Seriously. 18 people two days in a row, and then 6 on Sunday (when we had only been out for 50 minutes). So I'm pretty happy with that. Plus, Saturday, we actually made an effort to switch every door/person and it wasn't deathly terrifying! And I survived! So it turns out I am capable of talking to people. So that was great. I officially have a testimony of tracting. Even if we didn't really get any new investigators (or lessons, for that matter) out of it, it just felt so good to fulfill that part of our calling, to talk to everyone. Oh, it was awesome.

The reason we were so on top of it is because of our zone's focus this month: "forget yourself and go to work". As a part of that, they've kind of created something called Peoria 10/7, which means that the Peoria (East) zone is going to contact 10 people every day (per companionship), seven days a week. And they did that math: it figures out to approximately 2070 people contacted in the month (or what was left of the month when we started). So it's gonna be pretty epic. We're stoked.

Saturday, Bishop Goodman asked us to give talks, so we did that yesterday.... I was assigned Charity (from the Christlike attributes chapter in PMG); Hna Grant had Hope. The Elders had Patience, and Knowledge. Man, I had forgotten how much I dislike talks. But it was cool for me to study it because I've been doing this Charity Project thing (trying to anyway) where I broke down Moroni 10:45 in order to improve my own charity. The approach I took for my talk was how developing charity is part of our baptismal covenant, and how it relates to "the greatest commandment in the law", and "the second" (see Matt 22:35-40). So that was fun. What was funny was this: in Hna Grant's talk she said, "no good talk is complete without a food analogy..." so in mine I said, "Since no good talk is complete without a food analogy..." [I related it to neopolitan ice cream] and then in Sunday School, the teacher, Brother H, began by saying, "Since I learned today that no good talk, and therefore no good lesson, is complete without a food analogy..." haha then later someone in class said, "I bet Christ used food analogies." Someone else, "He did, all the time." One of the Elders, "'I am the Bread of Life'." hahaha oh man. Hna Grant and I were cracking up.

So here's something that I realized this week that I love about my companion:

- she doesn't mind when I tell her that she does something that bothers me. We just get it out in the open, figure it out, and move on. and it's totally okay! I love it. So I've determined to be like that my whole mission, and then we can avoid a whole lot of miscommunication.

- in every single finding/teaching opportunity, she invites them to do something that will bring them unto Christ. Which is what we're supposed to do, so I'm beginning to get in the habit. It's awesome.

- we laugh together, and have fun. We may laugh at really stupid things that no one else things are funny or even mentionable, but we have a good time. One of our goals this week from companionship inventory was to "strive for joyous dignity" because we don't want to be silly but we don't want to be somber.

Funny story for the week: On Saturday, we were doing some tracting in this apartment complex called the Arbors, and we met this guy and asked if we could give him a card, he said sure. When we asked if he'd heard of the Book of Mormon, he said yeah, it was a great musical. (or something to that effect). So we were like, "well the book is even better!" Anyway, we asked if he had much faith in Christ and he said not anymore, so we asked why that was. his response: "Look, can we just skip this part so you can go and I can go?" Oh man. It was so funny.....he was super polite about it, so it was just comical. We asked him to at least look up the website on the card (mormon.org) and he said, "I promise". So weird. But so fun. Tracting: you meet the greatest people.

Now to more spiritual matters: so I made the goal to not mark the newest challenge Book of Mormon during personal study (because I'm trying to be better at studying for my investigators) but I still read the first challenge, so I've been reading recently in Alma, the war chapters. And because I love marking things, I came up with a scheme to mark more things during these chapters (remember, I'm marking for the Doctrine of Christ, the Atonement, and Missionary Work). Here is my cast for the war chapters in the Book of Mormon:

- Moroni = a mission leader (i.e. Assistant to the President, Zone Leader)

- Helaman = a mission leader (i.e. Zone Leader, District Leader)

- stripling warriors = missionaries serving under Helaman (as Zone or District Leader)

- the People of Nephi = members

- the Cities of the Nephites = converts/members

    - when the city is taken by the Lamanites = less-actives

- Pahoran = a ward/stake leader (i.e. Stake President, Bishop)

- Lamanites = Satan/opposition in general

So, the war chapters are pretty blue in my Book of Mormon...haha but it's really cool because it's actually SUPER applicable to missionary work. The chapter I read this morning, Alma 60, I related to trying to work with ward leaders. Sometimes we, as missionaries, feel like they're not supportive or anything and we're just going at it on our own, which is so much less effective. However, as we know, Pahoran was just dealing with his own problems. So, sometimes as missionaries, we don't see everything going on in the ward that the Bishop has to deal with. I mean, do we ever see everything going on? yeah, probably not. But yeah, so that's cool. I love the Book of Mormon.

Okay, is anyone doing the marking challenge? (other than Hermana Emily Israelsen) If not, at the very least I hope you all are reading the Book of Mormon....

Well, that's it for me. I love you all and I hope you're doing well. Can you believe it's February? Cause I sure can't. That means I've only got just over a year left on my mission. Now that is just insane, and totally not okay.

Week 22: The Margins Are Weird and It Bothers Me, But I'm Lazy

5 Questions: 

1) About the boots, when I went to order the shorter, more traction boots--they didn't have then in a size 8.  How about these?  Will these work?  If you like them, I'll order then Monday. (Kamik Women's Vienna2 Boot)

2) If I am putting a little box together for you is there anything you would like me to include?  You haven't mentioned anything, really, so if you don't. you are at my mercy to send tings I think you 'll like.  Just saying.

3) How are your investigators progressing?

4) Do you even know why the ward has "trust issues" with the missionaries?  That is so weird to me.

5) Do you hear from anyone regularly besides me and Dad?  Just curious.

1. They didn't come in a size 7.5 did they? If not, no worries. Those look like they'll work just as well. Thanks momma. Also, I do hope you're using the Christmas money you and dad gave me. Because you should. Seriously. Do it. Okay? Okay.

2. Actually, if those white cap sleeve undershirts are still being sold at Costco (the brand says Heirloom), could you send me a couple? Mine are still wearable but I've got three from Down East that are just stretched out I think so they're a little difficult to work with. Oh, this may sound weird, but will you send me a little 3 ring binder from Deseret Book that says "Missionary Journal" on the front? The one I have right now is pink--and it's going to be bulgy pretty soon. Once I have filled it I'm going to send it home but I'll need another binder thing...I know, it's weird. But I've got more papers than will fit in the one binder well, so....yeah.  Did I tell you that missionary CD? I can't remember...sorry. Mi mente se fue...Also, I will probably be sending some stuff  home soonish because I don't want to have so much stuff to transfer with me...the problem is that I can't send winter stuff home because I'm going to need it again next winter, which is a little frustrating, but I'll deal  with it. One more thing regarding this, so I was debating about buying a suitcase that's bigger than the small one I've got because the small one is just barely too big to be a carry-on which means I could  have more room...(weight isn't my problem, it's space). But I wanted your opinion first. Plus, I'm not sure what I'd do with the small suitcase if I got a larger one to replace it... This isn't pressing or anything, but I was thinking that would help me out for transfers because last time I had two boxes of stuff that I can't just get rid of (study supplies and whatnot) but I don't wanna lug two extra boxes around the mission. Am I making any sense? I'm not sure... sorry.

P.S. What's the best way to send stuff home, specifically paper stuff? I know that weighs a lo and I'm not sure if it would be better to use a flat rate or just find a random box...

3. Well, currently we only have two progressing investigators (Angelina and Mary) and they both want to be baptized, but they've got a bit of a hold up--obviously, or they would've been baptized  already. Angelina just doesn't feel ready, though she basically is; we've taught her almost all of the lessons. She's so cute though. And then Mary was baptized before but had her name removed from Church records--through headquarters. So we're not exactly sure what needs to happen nor what is going to happen. So we're working with her and Bishop Eames (he's Australian) to get it figured out. All of our other investigators aren't technically progressing because they don't come to church. We've been going through the process of figuring out who is actually interested and who is just too polite to say no to us. That's something Hermana Grant is really good at. So it's a little sad to drop people, but I just have to keep telling myself that they're just not ready right now, but eventually they will be. President says there's a statistic from the Church that the average person hears the message six times and rejects it before accepting it.

4. No, I don't really know. Either no one actually knows or no one will tell us. Elders Campbell and Johnson told us what they know which is that there were issues with the meal calendar about a year ago because the Hermanas were just kind of doing their own thing and didn't really belong to anyone (or something like that) but still wanted to be fed which pulls from the Elders' meals so that's not
really fair and blah blah blah. I don't really know. It all seems a little strange but we've gotta deal with the ill effects either way.  Ah well. We met with Bishop Goodman this last week and had a good talk
about our role in his ward and what we can do to help, and our ward mission leader said Bishop sent an email that spoke favorably of us  and our meeting so it must've been a success. The problem is
(apparently) that we work in all the wards so we don't actually belong to anyone. So we're still figuring out what we can do for all of the wards, but since the sisters were taken out and all the wards have one set of Elders now, we have informed them all that we are more than happy to work with English people, specifically single sisters in the wards, less active or not, in order to built up Zion, as that is part of our calling as stated in Preach My Gospel. So the wards have pretty much embraced that and given us names of sisters to stop by, and we've already seen some success there, so that's really fulfilling. Brother Ames, one of our ward mission leaders, told us that his goal, or his vision, is just to get people in the Church in order to grow the wards--whether it's convert baptisms or  reactivation, it doesn't matter. And I feel the same way. Of course missionaries want to have baptisms, but bringing people to Christ is the ultimate goal.

5. Yes, Chris writes me every week, as well as Kate, pretty consistently. Marina and I have been emailing back and forth a bit because we're both pretty bad at writing letters. I've heard from Hermana Israelsen a few times too, so that's fun.

One question for Grandma and Grandpa Boomgaarden, do you remember an  Elder Lowe serving in Gilroy? One of the families in one of the wards, the Lowe's, their son comes home this Wednesday and he has served in Gilroy so just thought I'd ask.

So this week was really good for key indicators: we had seven member present lessons. Woohoo! We were thrilled with that. And, one of the standards of excellence is to have a member out with us every day and we had five of the seven--we would have had six out of seven except that because of the weather yesterday we weren't allowed to drive anywhere....but yeah! So that was awesome. And there was one day we had five or six lessons in one day. It was great. We really are seeing so many miracles here in Bloomington-Normal. It's fantastic.

So, funny story: in district meeting this last week, the Pontiac Elders led a discussion and did a practice about teaching the First Vision, and we talked about how Satan will do just about anything to
stop us from saying the First Vision because it invited the Spirit so strongly. So we were talking about experiences we've had with that--one was that just as they were starting, the dog walked into the
room, threw up, and walked out. haha oh man....too funny. The one I shared was that just as we were beginning to talk about Joseph Smith, the guy in the room who was asleep woke up and started ranting about something in Spanish but he's extremely hard to understand and then he was crying while ranting so he was even harder to understand. SO weird. haha but funny, looking back. haha.

Anyway, so then they did their practice, the Elders, and just as they were starting the First Vision, the church phone rang. No joke. So Elder Hamman, who was the investigator, "picked up" the phone (using his iPad) and pretended like he was on the phone--Elder Campbell responded in kind, using his
iPad, and they had a "conversation" on the phone. Afterwards, when we were talking about the practice, Elder Hamman thought Elder Campbell had called the church phone but he said he hadn't. Then, later, we did a big group practice and Elder Campbell volunteered to be the investigator (a 90 year old man named Gerald who "Just loves Jesus"....oh my) and just as we were starting the First Vision, someone called the Bloomington 1st Elders' phone--and Elder Campbell had it. hahaha. Oh my goodness. It was hilarious.... Satan is real! No joke. Oh man, it was such a funny district meeting. We have an awesome district. I admit, I thought it would be weird to be the only sisters, and it is, but it's also entertaining. But then, maybe it's just this group of Elders. haha either way, always a laugh, every week.

On Saturday we were going to put Angelina on date for 14 February but she told us she doesn't feel ready. After we talked about it for a bit, she told us to invite Jimmy ass well....so we did. haha his
response: I'd only be baptized in a warm month! So we ended up inviting him to pray about being baptized in July, which he said he'd do.

I've been practicing the piano a bit--no one in our district can play well enough for us to sing to--and I am seriously wishing I had stuck with it. I know, momma: you told me so. However, it's been fun to  play periodically (only about once a week because it's P-day). I hadn't realized how much I like it. I also put some sheet music on my iPad so I can play songs wherever I am--including the Mutual Theme Song for this year, "Embark". I was worried at first because it's 10 pages long but you basically play like 10 different chords the entire time. So it was actually pretty easy. Anyway, maybe  when I get back I'll be able to play the hymns well enough for people to sing to.

Yesterday, they cancelled/moved church so we just had sacrament meeting at 10; everyone was saying that we'd get 6-12 inches of snow basically overnight. Yeah, we got maybe 4", in the deepest
spots....but ah well. Hermana Grant and I walked to church, since we live 1.5 miles from the church (not kidding; 1.5 miles is accurate). But it was a fantastic testimony meeting. The youth had a Book of Mormon read-a-thon this weekend and so various youth, leaders, and parents bore testimony and shared stories from that. And, since we didn't have to be at the church super early, we got to do  personal study before church. I studied faith, and it was awesome because Brother Winsor bore his testimony about faith. Mm, it was so good. I love meetings like that.

Basically, being a missionary is the hardest thing I've done and I think it may be the hardest thing I ever do, but I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. I am learning so much--about the Gospel,
about people, about myself, about my Father in Heaven. SO MUCH. It hit me this week that January was ending, which means in one month it'll be March which means I've been a full-time missionary for 5 whole months. Excuse me?! Yeah, not cool.

5)  Can you wear polka dot tights? I picked up some cute ones (black with white and grey spots) at Target and apparently I bought the wrong size. I didn't have my glasses on at the store. I got them to go with my gray "sister missionary" skirt.  I'll send them if you can use them.

1. Okay, so Hermana Grant is from British Colombia, a town called Kamloops. She's 21 (I think). She's a mixture between a llama and a raptor. We like the same foods (we made chili mac n cheese w/hot dogs and it was scrumptious). She's decided to say, when asked about experience with Spanish before the mission, that she took a couple episodes of Dora the Explorer. She knew French before the mish but can't remember much now (since it's so close to Spanish) except the word for trash.

3. I wear a 7.5 usually, but I'm thinking it might be better to get a size 8 so I can wear more than one pair of socks....maybe. I'm not sure. 7.5 should be good. I don't even like socks. And regarding style, I'm not sure. That first pair looks more hard-core which would be great, but I think the tall ones would be good because the snow kind of really piles up here...but I don't want them to leak or anything...so I dunno. And I vote black, over brown.

Also, if you're going to send a package, do you think you could make a copy of that CD by the Nashville Tribute Band, it's a grey case, I can't recall exactly what the title is. Also, did you ever find that The Lamb of God CD? Just curious. No worries if not. If you've got questions, I bet Hermana Israelsen could tell you more. haha

(So I'm typing at the moment while at GreatClips b/c Hermana Grant is getting her hair cut; one of the hairdressers has a tattoo of the dark mark....probably shouldn't compliment people's tattoos, especially as a missionary.....haha. Thought you might appreciate that.)

Also, in RS yesterday, they talked about how saying family prayer in the morning is like equipping their kids with armor before heading out into the world. The teacher said she likes to think of it like she's giving them the invisibility cloak. (: haha. Then I took it one step further: in the tale of the three brothers, the one with the cloak, at the end, he "greets death like an old friend". So as we say family prayers every day, at the end of our lives, we will be able to greet Heavenly Father like an old friend. (: Love fun parallels.

Here's another one: in the testimony of the prophet Joseph Smith, in the front of the Book of Mormon, page x, second full paragraph, he says near the end, "...I must have no other object in view in getting the plates but to glorify God...otherwise I could not get them." Well, what does that sound like to you? Uh, yeah, Mirror of Erised and the Philosopher's Stone of course.

We ate dinner at the Babbitt family's home yesterday. They have two dogs, and I think one is a Shi Tzu. His name is Bandit. And he looks just like an Ewok from Star Wars! It was fantastic.... Love it.

Alright. Well, let's just say this week has been rough for me. Luckily I've got a father who is either a mind reader, across however-many-miles or is in tune with the Spirit. Got a nice scriptural slap upside the head today. Plus, I've been doing some serious sincere prayer. I decided to get into the habit of praying (out loud) while my companion is in the shower. It's seriously a miracle worker habit. I've come to realize, also thank to zone conference, that I am (lamentably) missionary A. And I need (and want) to be missionary B. So I've made a short list (long mental list) of what I need to do in order to get to that point. And I'm beginning with my prayers. That's like square one anyway, right? So yeah. That's happening.

I also decided that I need to be better with my scriptures; I've decided to work more on memorizing scriptures. I wouldn't say it's to help me focus from distracting worldly things to missionary-minded things, but it is to help me feel closer to the Spirit. And I'm beginning with my favorite chapter in the Book of Mormon: 2 Nephi 4. And I'm going to do it in Spanish. So far, I've got verse 28 and almost 29 done (I'm beginning with verses 28-35 for now...) After I think I'm going to memorize My Commission, and then hopefully the Living Christ. I'm excited for the challenge; I feel like this is something that's going to help my mental and emotional health more than anything else--except maybe praying.

Mary Hilding met with Bishop Eames yesterday; sounds like he's never dealt with this situation before, so he's not sure what will happen. He's going to write a letter to the First Presidency and I guess we'll go from there. I just hope everything works out well. Mary just seems to have such a sincere desire to come back to the fold of God. And I want to do everything I can to help her. We met with her yesterday and she brought up a concern she has with Joseph Smith translating the Book of Mormon from gold plates. I'm not sure if her concern comes from the fact that they were written on gold plates or that Joseph was uneducated so how could he translate anything...I dunno. But she was willing to keep reading and praying and coming to church. I think she'll figure it out, and that she won't allow her baptism to happen while she still has questions and concerns like that.

Angelina came to church again yesterday, and she brought Jimmy this time! We were so thrilled. I can't remember how much I've told you about him, but he was a referral from Angelina (because he's old and she thinks he needs help) and when we first met him he was almost contentious. And now he's reading the Book of Mormon (the chapter headings for now) and coming to church. And every time we have a lesson with him, he has oodles of questions. But they're such good questions! We're going to get him a Bible in English because he wanted a copy of the Chronology and I think the Harmony of the Gospels; for now we gave him a printed copy from lds.org. I'm so excited for him. And Angelina is still doing well. Unfortunately she hadn't read between our previous visit and Saturday, so she's not progressing in that sense. But she still loves coming to church and the members are so good at fellowshipping her--even though she goes to a ward in which she doesn't live. It's awesome. The RS invited her to an activity on valentine's day and she said she'll come. So that's great. I think it would be perfect if she were baptized on 14 Feb because she's so loving, but she seems set on waiting until her daughters can be baptized the same day. I just wish she would see that it's more important for her to set the example. But that's probably just me being selfish because I want to see her be baptized before I leave. Ah well. It'll happen eventually.

Unfortunately, as far as investigators go, that's about it. This week has felt so unproductive. I'm not sure I really like having a car all the time, because now we don't really have any walking time, or time on the bus. I shouldn't complain, because it is such a blessing and I really am grateful, but there are pros and cons to both.

Also, we've been trying to figure out how to work with our wards better. We found out there was some drama in the Bloomington First ward about a year ago, about the meal calendar. So Bishop G has been reluctant to put us (the hermanas) on the calendar because in the past they've just done their own thing and he doesn't feel like he has any stewardship over them. (That's my understanding anyway.) And I see where he's coming from, and I don't want to step on his keys, but I would like to get to know the members. And the best way to do that is to be in their homes. So instead we'll just go visit them on our own time. Brother A (our ward mission leader) did say that Bishop told him he would like us to visit every sister in the ward every month. I'm not sure if we can do that (since we have three wards) but I think we should at least give it a shot. We kind of need to buy some love with him--earn his trust I mean. So we'll see what happens there.

Zone conference was inspired. It was just amazing. I can't even explain it. The assistants' presentation was seriously divine intervention for me. It was like Heavenly Father was giving me a pep talk. Loved it. And of course, there were some laughs which is always nice. I wish everyone could listen to our zone conferences. They're spectacular.

On Saturday, we were talking to a less active to try to get him to church and in the middle of his sentence, he stops and looks at me, then says "you have great eyes!" Uh...........SO AWKWARD. Please, just, no. So that was awkward.

Did I tell you Hermana Grant electrocuted herself the other day? yeah, that was a little funny...

I wish I could remember more fun/good things from this week, but that's about it.

OH! Okay, so President gave us a new marking challenge at zone conference last week. Y'all ready for this? (I'll explain more after this for all of you who haven't served under the blessed direction of President Fenn.)

Red: grace, mercy, love of God, His love for us

Yellow: the pattern of revelation (scripture study, prayer, receiving revelation)

Blue: what the Book of Mormon says about the Book of Mormon, the Restoration, and Joseph Smith

Hermana Israelsen: the deadline he gave us was April 6. Think you can make that? (:

Rest of my family: President Fenn is a genius, and has given his missionaries various Book of Mormon marking challenges to do. The first one (which I received 14 October 2014 was R: the Atonement, Y: the Doctrine of Christ, B: Missionary Work; it was supposed to be completed before the Christmas devotional--that didn't happen, nor has it happened yet....but it will.) There's a second one as well, and then this third one we received last week. On 6 April we'll have a mission-wide conference (the date is significant; brownie points to anyone who knows why) and we'll talk about what we've learned from this round of marking. I'm so excited. So, I want to invite all of my family members--Mom, you'll probably be the only one to do this in our immediate family.....ah well--to obtain a new copy of the Book of Mormon (just one of the ones that the missionaries give out) and to mark it as you read it, according to the newest challenge I've just described. Now, I don't expect anyone to complete it before 6 April, but if you'd like to, feel free. At least before the end of the year. Okay? Will all of you reading this commit to doing that? I'll follow up periodically with you all. That's a promise. Sweet. I look forward to hearing your insights.

To begin, here's something I've liked so far:

In Nephi's vision, the reason he has it is this, as he says: "...after I had desired to know the things that my father had seen, and believing that the Lord was able to make them known unto me, as I sat pondering in mine heart I was caught away in the Spirit of the Lord."

So the first aspects of receiving revelation, as Nephi did, are these: desire, belief (faith), and pondering. Then, in the succeeding chapters, every time Nephi says "I beheld" or "I saw", I marked that.

Another thing I've learned from Nephi's vision is that revelation comes after EXACT obedience. I marked every time "the angel said Look! and I looked" because every time, Nephi receives revelation. It just goes to show how important our own obedience is. If we want to receive revelation, first we must desire, believe, and ponder, and then we must be obedient to the revelation we do receive if we want to receive more. Mm. I love the Book of Mormon.

Well, that's about it for me this week. I love you all. I am so grateful for all of the support and the prayers. Thank you also for your testimonies. I am so blessed to have family and friends that "know in whom [they] have trusted".

Week 20: BONUS

In a note just to her mom, Sister DeBuck asked if her brother, Cameron, ever checked his email.  She had sent him messages there but hadn't heard from him.  After passing on the message to her brother this evening, he forwarded the email trail....He hasn't watched the Frozen movie from start to finish yet (He explained that he's a boy, so he didn't HAVE to watch it) and thought the "Elsa" in the subject line was a Spanish word he couldn't remember.

Anyone else get a kick out of the Disney-flavored sibling humor?!?

Week 20: Swallowing Our Pride & Asking

5 Questions:

1) How is your skin holding up in the weather?  Lots of breakouts?  Super dry?  Do you need anything either way--acne stuff or moisturizer?    Mine's been bad here, so I wondered about you.

2) What is the decision on winter boots?  Any preferences where you'd like me to get them?

3) Do you know where to find Borax?  Look in the laundry aisle at the grocery store/WalMart. If you can't find it, I'll send you some. (She'd asked for a super whitening solution--something she pinned on Pinterest pre-mission)

4) Do you ever hear from Super Kate?  She's been on my mind lately, and I don't know why.  I do hope she is well and happy and progressing in school, even while you're away.

5) Do you check your mailbox regularly at the apartment?  I have a postcard I was sending you there,so you'll get mail at your place.

1. My hands are pretty chapped, which is rough because I detest having lotion on my fingers....but it's either chapped skin or slimy fingers. Which is the lesser of the two evils? I don't know.

Acne wise it's about the same....I dunno. I don't really pay that much attention because I look in the mirror about twice a day for about 30 seconds collectively. There's not a whole lot to be done during the day, obviously. haha so I'm doing fine. Thanks though.

2. Well, originally I thought, "Oh we've got a car all the time so I'll be okay w/o real boots." But then I realized that I'm pretty sure I'll be transferred next transfer. And who knows what the car situation will be wherever I go next....so some boots would be great. And I have absolutely no idea where you could find good winter boots. I wish I could give you more specifics but I'm not even sure how to put "what I don't like" into words....but I think it'll be more important to stay dry and warm than to look particularly fashionable. haha so, use your best judgment I guess.

3. Uh...I'll find it. I was actually thinking of the recipe for a mixture of some kind that you just put on the white article and then scrub...I would rather not use the washing machine because it costs $1.25 per load (in this new apartment we don't have our own washer...) I believe I wrote the recipe down and it was on a blue sticky note in my room by the windowsill or it's written in the back of that book I got about surviving w/o mom or something....I can't remember exactly what it's called. If you can't find the recipe thing, no worries. Just thought I'd ask.

4. Yeah she emails me about every week. I think she's doing alright...possibly going crazy from school and canoe and life, but I think she's doing well, all things considered.

5. Uh...at the other apartment we did. At this one, we forget a lot because the mail box is in the complete opposite direction of anything else, so we just don't think about it.

Wow. I'm sorry but I am so unmotivated to write this week.
Here's a bulleted list I guess:

- Brother Albrechtsen gave me a blessing this week; I just had a cold (still do) but I just felt like it was impeding me mentally and I couldn't take it anymore. [I told him my middle name, and after the blessing a bit he said I should marry Elder Peery...very funny]

- Hermana Grant got an ear infection/has a hole in her ear drum so we ended up at PromptCare yesterday and we ended up seeing Dr. Csah/Brother Cash so that was kind of nice. She also got a blessing from Brother A.

- Basically, the elders are always at the church....so we've gotten good at finding McDonalds and the two libraries in town so that we can use the WiFi. We also use Brother Ames' (when we're at his home for MCM) and the other Albrechtsen family's--we actually finished up our weekly planning at their home b/c the elders were once again at the church. haha we're so needy...

- We had this crazy lesson Saturday night: three Hispanics that spoke minimal English, a Vietnamese guy and an American guy who speak minimal Spanish. Oh man. It was complete and utter chaos. more than other lessons. Why, you may ask? Well: our progressing investigator, Angelina, is an angel and also wants to share the Gospel with everyone. Which is great. however, her two Latina friends were over already when we stopped by; the one believes in some kind of all-powerful entity and her ancestors (I'm not exactly sure how that works) and then the other lady basically believes she has the priesthood (she didn't really understand the priesthood at all...) and that she has healed a woman who as practically dead and that she's seen Christ. And then the Vietnamese guy is Buddhist and neither of us have taught someone with a non-Christian background. And the American guy is pretty super Roman Catholic but very willing to listen and has a lot of great questions. So, basically: chaos, I tell you. We've decided we really just need to teach people one on one, because this translating business is way too difficult for them to understand.....I would try to sum up that lesson but i can't. let's just say it ended with the two Latina ladies both asking for copies of the Book of Mormon (the one asked for one in English for her husband because she's already got a Spanish one from a really good friend in Texas who is Mormon.) and the other lady...I hope she doesn't desecrate it or something.

- We have dinner appointments every day this week. Wow. The members here are so good to us... (: love them.

- We inherited a giant winter coat. So we both got in it. (:

- We love fast food. it's bad.....

And then this week:

- Zone conference on Wednesday. Woohoo!

- Our dinner appt for tonight told us they invited a non member friend (and they told her that we'll be there so she won't be surprised). Member missionary work!

- One of our investigators, Jorge, has roommates that don't really like us being there so we had to find an alternate meeting place; luckily there's a super solid couple that lives nearby (just had an adorable baby) and we've been having lessons at their home. Brother Guyer and Jorge hit it off super well. Mm, love it when that happens. THAT is an Amulek.

- There are probably other good things but I can't think right now...

So yeah. That's gonna be it for this week. I hope everyone is doing well and looking for opportunities to share the Gospel. Because it's your duty as members of Christ's church. (I am definitely not trying to guilt trip anyone...haha)
